Securing RTP packets using persistent packet key encryption scheme for real-time multimedia applications

چکیده

Most of the existing encryption methods use the same key to secure different RTP payloads during a given session. However, the use of the session key cannot guarantee protection against brute force attacks that can be done after transmission using the captured RTP data for the realtime multimedia streams. This paper deals with the packet key methods where Diffie-Hellman key exchange procedures repeat only for the RTP packets that are selected based on the key change rate. This paper proposes a persistent packet key encryption scheme that uses the same packet key for a certain period and changes the key for the next period. The key change schedule is controlled by the key change rate. The persistent packet key encryption scheme aims to improve latency for encryption and decryption compared with the full packet key encryption scheme where the packet key changes every packet. The main goal of this paper is to propose the packet key scheme that is significantly more secure than the session key scheme while satisfying the latency requirements for the real-time multimedia transmission.

A Method to Reduce Effects of Packet Loss in Video Streaming Using Multiple Description Coding

Multiple description (MD) coding has evolved as a promising technique for promoting error resiliency of multimedia system in real-time application programs over error-prone communicational channels. Although multiple description lattice vector quantization (MDCLVQ) is an efficient method for transmitting reliable data in the context of potential error channels, this method doesn’t consider disc...

RFC 6904 Encrypted SRTP Header Extensions

The Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (SRTP) provides authentication, but not encryption, of the headers of Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) packets. However, RTP header extensions may carry sensitive information for which participants in multimedia sessions want confidentiality. This document provides a mechanism, extending the mechanisms of SRTP, to selectively encrypt RTP header extensio...

User-Perceived Quality-Aware Adaptation of Streamed Multimedia over Best-effort IP Networks

There are many transport protocols that can be used for streaming multimedia over best-effort networks. These protocols are designed are designed to enhance the services of the underlying transport protocol (i.e. TCP/IP or UDP/IP). The Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) is used for facilitating the streaming of multimedia data packets whilst the Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP) is us...

Rtp4mux: a Novel Mpeg-4 Rtp Payload for Multicast Video Communications over Wireless Ip

The ISO/IEC MPEG-4 multimedia content creation, management and distribution framework is foreseen to be an important component of many forthcoming Wireless IP Multimedia services. However, current approaches for transporting MPEG-4 Elementary streams over IP networks are not optimized for wireless group communications. To address this issue we propose a novel Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) ...

Increase the Security Level for Real-Time Application Using New Key Management Solution

A real-time application Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the technology that enables data packets transmission over internet protocol (IP). Security is of concern whenever open networks are to be used. In general, the real-time applications suffer from packet latency and loss due to the nature of IP network. Cryptographic systems may be used to achieve the security goals, but their impact...
